Chotto: The Multifunctional Chair Redefining Ergonomics and Human-Computer Interaction

The inspiration for the Chotto came from the personal experience of Thomas Stroman, the designer behind Stroman Design. After undergoing back surgery in 2006, Stroman decided to pursue a less physically demanding career as an architect. As graduation approached in 2012, he realized the need for a better response to the design challenge of spending increasing amounts of time sitting in front of a computer.

The Chotto stands out with its unique and innovative features. Its ideal weight displacing and active recumbent seating surface decompresses both the cervical and lumbar spine, promoting better posture and reducing strain. The seating surface dynamically adapts to the weight, shape, and movement of each occupant, ensuring optimal comfort and support.

One of the standout features of the Chotto is its pivoting headrest, which can be micro-adjusted in up to 100 unique positions, providing personalized comfort and support for the neck and head. Additionally, a portable and adjustable tray offers a convenient task surface for eating, reading, writing, or digital interaction, whether in a seated or standing position. Internal storage drawers can be easily accessed from both the standing and seated position, adding to the chair's functionality.

The realization of the Chotto involved a combination of innovative technologies and materials. The concept originated from combining two yoga balls with a seating surface, which was then supported by a rigid frame to maintain stability. Extensive testing of various foams and fabrics resulted in the unique multi-layer seating surface that provides both flexibility and support. Structural prototyping with different materials and fabrication technologies ensured the Chotto's production readiness.

With its dimensions of L 1625 mm x W 762 mm x H 1066 mm, the Chotto can accommodate up to two users simultaneously in both standing and seated positions. Its versatility allows users to place a portable tray within the rear support brackets, transforming it into an adjustable standing desk. A seated user can also position an identical tray within the side supports to interact with their preferred devices or materials.

The Chotto project began in New York City in 2015, with the Chotto 1.0 making its debut at the 2016 ICFF. The Chotto 2.0, a refined version of the design, was completed in 2017. Extensive research and feedback from focus groups and trade show participants have demonstrated the Chotto's ability to provide immediate sensations of floating, decompression, and improved well-being.

The Chotto challenges the status quo by redefining what is possible within the scope of ergonomic seating and human-computer interaction. Its minimalist design seamlessly integrates highly ergonomic and functional features, offering a healthier and more comfortable seating experience.

The Chotto has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation, receiving the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
